Unlacquered Brass Taps and Fittings: Timeless Beauty from Perrin & Rowe

Whether you’re planning a full renovation or refreshing an existing space, choosing premium unlacquered brass taps can transform your kitchen or bathroom. As one of the most frequently used fittings in the home, brassware must balance beauty, durability and performance. Handcrafted, unlacquered brass kitchen and bathroom taps from Perrin & Rowe offer a timeless finish that evolves gracefully over time, developing a rich, characterful patina unique to your home.

Why Choose Unlacquered Brass Taps for Kitchens and Bathrooms?

Adding character, texture and warmth, Perrin & Rowe offers three luxurious brass finishes for its kitchen and bathroom collections, which will develop their own unique patina over time. These ‘living’ finishes - Aged Brass (kitchen only), Satin Brass and Polished Brass - are all deliberately unlacquered so that the beauty of the natural material is revealed and gets better over time.

What Is a Patina? Understanding Living Brass Finishes

Raw unlacquered brass finishes react to their environment and touch. The effect may include unique spots and marks (also known as a patina) that can appear instantly or over time. The result is a tactile and distinctive look that suits both classic and contemporary decors.

Aged Brass Kitchen Taps

Unlacquered Aged Brass kitchen taps will patina a little quicker than the other Perrin & Rowe brass finishes and are ideal for those who want an aged or 'vintage' look that feels unique. This finish is available on kitchen fittings only.

Satin Brass Kitchen & Bathroom Taps

Satin Brass is also a raw and unlacquered finish. It has been brushed by hand, so it has a matte appearance, and is slightly lighter than the Aged Brass finish.

Polished Brass Kitchen & Bathroom Taps

A hand-polished finish, unlacquered Polished Brass taps offer a brighter finish compared with the Aged Brass and Satin Brass finishes.

Matching Unlacquered Brass Kitchen Handles

Matching kitchen taps and cupboard handles helps to create a cohesive, polished design. In most cases the only way to get a perfect match is to choose handles from the same manufacturer as your taps. Meticulously crafted at the Perrin & Rowe foundry in Wolverhampton (where all Perrin & Rowe brassware is made) and using the highest quality brass, the furniture handle collection is available in five distinctive styles and the same eight finishes as Perrin & Rowe brassware, including unlacquered Aged, Polished and Satin Brass.

Unlacquered Brass Bathroom Taps: Adding Warmth and Texture

Increasingly the finish of choice for kitchens, brass finishes are now sought after for bathrooms.

Designers are also combining brassware finishes to create layered visual interest. Brushed brass finish taps paired with matte black or chrome introduce contrast, while avoiding a uniform, overly matched look. Perrin & Rowe offers five distinctive bathroom collections with a comprehensive range of basin taps and mixers, bath taps and mixers, showers and accessories available in unlacquered Polished Brass and Satin Brass.

Care and Cleaning Guide

To keep brassware looking its best, dry with a soft cloth after each use. Clean regularly using warm water or a mild pH neutral soap, then polish with a clean, lint-free cloth. A damp microfibre cloth is ideal for gentle, scratch-free cleaning.

Always rinse away residue from soap, toothpaste, shampoo and cleaning products, as these can cause blemishes if left on the surface. Avoid contact with bleach or harsh household cleaners and immediately rinse and dry any accidental splashes. When cleaning surrounding surfaces, cover your fittings to protect the finish.

To remove limescale, apply a 50/50 solution of lemon juice and water using cotton wool. Leave for up to one hour, rinse thoroughly and dry. Repeat if necessary, ensuring the surface is rinsed between treatments.

All Perrin & Rowe brassware is made with the highest quality brass, poured by hand at 1700° Fahrenheit into moulds. After machining and soldering by hand, specialist polishers develop the deep, lustrous finish. Polishing may sound simple, but it requires exceptional skill - a large tap can take up to an hour. Perrin & Rowe's team of polishers have a minimum of 10 years’ experience and have learnt how to achieve the best finish on hundreds of different products. Every single tap is pressure-tested with water before it receives a final polish and is boxed for despatch.

Frequently Asked Questions About Unlacquered Brass Taps

Will unlacquered brass taps change over time?

Yes - and that is precisely their appeal. Unlacquered brass is a living finish, meaning it reacts naturally to air, water and touch. Over time, your tap will develop a rich patina unique to your home, adding depth and authenticity that cannot be replicated by coated finishes.

Is patina considered a flaw?

Not at all. Patina is a hallmark of genuine, unlacquered brass. Subtle tonal shifts, markings and darkening enhance the character of the metal, giving taps a distinctive warmth and individuality.

Can I keep my polished brass taps looking bright?

If you prefer a brighter appearance, unlacquered Polished Brass can be gently polished to restore its shine. However, many homeowners choose to embrace the evolving surface, allowing the tap to mature naturally.

Are unlacquered brass taps suitable for modern interiors?

Yes. While often associated with classic and heritage designs, brass taps introduce warmth and contrast to contemporary spaces. They also pair well with coloured cabinetry – in particular pink, green and blue.
