Designing a Luxury Utility Room

Utility rooms are known for their practicality and function. Yet while these are crucial elements to consider, these spaces can be luxurious, too. Whatever you want your utility room to deliver in terms of function, there are plenty of finishing touches such as striking brassware that can be added to enhance a luxe look.

Let there be light.

Utility rooms are often considered fairly dark spaces, located in the middle of the home with no natural light. The utility room in this design by interior designer Laura Binns is narrow, yet a skylight floods the space with natural light. Clever storage solutions means every inch of space has been utilised, proving that a utility room doesn't have have to be huge to be beautiful. A Shaws of Darwen Butler sink is the perfect hardworking utility room sink.

Personalise your space.

The utility room is one of those rooms where you can really add your own personality and be daring and fun. In this laundry room by Laura Butler-Madden, striking ‘Carnival’ wallpaper by Christopher Farr Cloth is quite literally the star of the show. When Laura and her husband bought the house this space was a ‘cave with an old stone sink’, but the couple have managed to convert it into a luxurious utility complete with Miele appliances, a Shaws of Darwen fireclay sink and Perrin & Rowe Polaris 3-in-1 instant hot tap with rinse in aged brass.

Why have just one tap?

Full of the joys of spring, this utility room by Megan of Kit & Co. is so bright and breezy. It combines Sanderson Hedera Green wallpaper with not two but four aged brass deVOL Mayan taps, made exclusively for deVOL by Perrin & Rowe. Paired with a Shaws of Darwen Double Bowl 800 sink, each bowl has its own set of taps for ultimate usability. This room is the owner’s favourite room in the house, and doubles up as a potting room too.

Complement the kitchen.

With plenty of space for laundry and cleaning, this utility room by @beaumonthouse_renovation has been styled as an extension of the kitchen, and features our Ionian mixer in aged brass. If you have the room to extend the kitchen into a separate area for the washing machine and tumble dryer, you can create a continuous look with matching cabinetry. This works particularly well for large, light-filled spaces.

Play by the rules.

A utility room is a luxury, and there are some key features that will work and are worth considering no matter your style. A generous sink, larger than the one you'd have in a kitchen, is useful for muddy boots, muddy dogs, laundry and washing, and big pots and pans. Storage is another must; keep your household cleaning products hidden away to avoid the space looking cluttered and messy.
